The Stylist Guide to NYC

I scooped up this awesome little book at Anthropologie a few months ago in hopes that it could be helpful in planing my next trip up to New York City.  The book follows author,  Siballa Court around the big apple as she fills readers in on all of the most exciting and interesting shops and boutiques.  Complete with photos, brief write-ups, and logistics of each stop this book is a must-have for anyone who's looking to shop at stores beyond the big box type.
And as fate would have it, I'll be in NYC on business all next week! With only a brief time for shopping and exploring, I've already begun using this book to map out the places I have to see.  Luckily, the book not only covers shopping, but fresh food markets and restaurants as well.
As I said before, I got my copy of the book at Anthropologie, but you can get your own copy right here.

Fresh from the Market

As promised, here is a peek at my market treasures! I picked up a few more items then what's shown here; some for the shop and some for my crafting.
The birdcage on the right is my newest addition! With a beautiful slate blue base, this cage sits atop my kitchen cabinets and joins two other cages in my mini-collection. I love that each cage is a different shape and the delicate, fragile feel that they bring to a room.  Finding birdcages in my price range- which is $65 or below- has become a challenge, as the popularity of cages has gone up. It's another item I wish I would have started collecting years ago, before they were so hot. I paid $30 for this beauty.
Unfortunately I had to unscrew the top ring (used to hang the cage) in order to make it fit between the cabinets and ceilings. No big deal, but I've made a note to self- measure that distance before the next shopping trip!
Ball/Mason jars were everywhere. Annie and I found only a few at a recent market we attended, which made us think they were hard to find, and worth a higher price tag. Not the case at all. If you know where to look, they can be found.
Nelson's autograph book. A steel at only $10.

I couldn't believe my ears when the seller told me the price of these cabinet cards- $1 each!  The best part- they are all photographs of couples on their wedding day. I absolutely love them! I came home with a stack of 10.

It may still be August, but who can resist a holiday decoration as cute as this for $1? Certainly not me!
Beautiful fruit from the produce/flower stand amidst the tables of antiques.
The other big purchase I made was a set of two old wood frames. They are stunning, with lovely age spots, and bubbled glass. They will be the perfect way to show off some pressed flower sheets I've been collecting.

Friday!

We made it to Friday!!! This week flew by (for me at least), and I'm ready for a few days all to myself! I've got a shopping planed with my mom and a good friend, work time, QT with Joe, and dog-sitting scheduled in the next two days.  What are you plans for the weekend?
I had another flower photo shoot yesterday. I hope you don't mind the same subject two days in a row, but I wanted to take full advantage of the beautiful flowers I picked up at Trader Joe's. Did you know they sell sweet bouquets of flowers for only $3.99?!  It costs less than a trip to Starbucks to brighten a room up :)
I took these photo's in our kitchen where I have a little vignette which included mason jars, the NORTH sign from my first antiquing trip with Joe, and type blocks of our initials.  I love the little arrangement.
In shop news, I have begun to make a TON in inventory down to clearance prices. I'd like to find new homes for many of the items as I've started to amass quite a collection. Be sure to check back often, I promise the prices will be GREAT!

A Paris Market Story

Have you noticed that all over blog-land people are either planing trips to Paris, or posting photographs from their recent trips there. Every time I read a post like this or this, I feel a sharp pang of jealousy.  My love for all things Paris, and French for that matter, runs deep, and I only wish I was planing another trip to the city of light too! I know I'll go back to Paris several more times in my life, but patience is not a virtue I was blessed with. So for now, all I have are sweet, sweet memories from my last trip, hundreds of beautiful photographs and one fabulous story...

I didn't take many photos of the Brocants (flea markets) around Paris because I'd read they could be unsafe, and tourist should be aware of pick-pockets and thieves.  While that was true for an area or two, I'd say for the most part the markets were very safe and friendly. I so regret not having photos of the amazing-ness that is a Paris Brocant to share with you now. We visited everything from open air markets with vendors set up on tables lining the street, to flea markets where every vendor was essentially in their own storage unit, complete with roll-up door.

Before we left for vacation Mom and I both made a list of things we'd hoped to find in Paris. Mom's list was all jewelry items, and mine was mainly ephemera. I'd found some old french legal documents on etsy, and I was really hoping I would find at least one more on the trip.  The documents were folded pieces of large, aged paper that were covered both front and back with the most beautifully french writing.
When we got to the market on the first day, and as I wondered though the booths, I started to realize that these documents weren't quite as easy to find as I'd hoped. The one or two that I saw were in horrible condition, and priced exuberantly high.
As Mom and I wondered from booth to booth, we would occasionally bump into each other, and we were always stoping to point out what the other "had to see".
I spotted mom having a chat with an older gentleman who had a booth along the street just ahead of me. When I walked up to join them the first thing that caught my attention was a huge stack of documents sitting on the table. I gasped, and looked at mom.
"Do you like them?" she asked.  I'm sure the answer was written all over my face. "Oui!"
"I just bought them for you. ALL of them!" I couldn't believe my ears. A friendly nod from the old man reassured me that I had heard her right, as he began to load the documents into a plastic grocery bag.  Total shock and disbelief.
I couldn't believe the treasures I held in my hand as we walked away from the table. I'd been gifted exactly what I'd hoped to find.  Fifty-four of the most beautiful packets of paper I've ever seen. I spent hours that night in the hotel room studying the impecable handwriting and looking for familiar words.
What happened if the writer were to make a mistake?
What did each of these documents say?
What was Parian life like at the time these were written?
How could someone part with something so beautiful?
Be sure to stop by my shop for your own brocante treasure!

I'm in love!

I am the proud new owner of a Nikon D3100 DSLR camera! This was a huge purchase, and quite an investment for me. Although I was a little uneasy about spending so much money, knowing that it's an investment in my growing business and a tool that will help me create the lifestyle I'm pursuing made me feel good about my purchase.
Im having a wonderful time exploring the functions of the camera, and experimenting with different compositions.
I'll be sharing more photographs with you as I continue to learn!

A Solution

If you recall, I was having trouble deciding how I wanted to embellish an old, chippy white, painted window frame that I had hung in my kitchen. I was looking for something simple, vintage, and light colored that could easily be changed with my evolving tastes.
After doing my post last week featuring all of the new treasures I had picked up at the market, it occurred to me that the french book pages would fit the panes perfectly. I thought I'd give it a try. I used tiny balls of that stretch, sticky putty in each of the corners of the page to be sure I wasn't damaging these beautiful pieces of ephemera. Once I had two sheets hung in the panes I knew it was the perfect solution!
I absolutely love the end result! I catch myself stopping to study the pages often, and I'm thrilled that the pages are getting so much attention.
